Birth Period of our Dhaka 1608 to 1971

What was the birth period of our loving city Dhaka? According to the rules of nature it is fixed for the animal like the birth period of human baby is about 10 months, but is it applicable for a city? Someone will say, “No”. But I do strongly say “Yes”. But it is not fixed all the time. What Dhaka is today - was born in 1971 as the capital of Bangladesh by getting birth of Bangladesh through a sanguinary war of 9 months. But the conceive period of Dhaka had been started on 1608 when Subedar Islam Khan was appointed as Governor of Bangal and Dhaka was chosen as the capital of Mughal province. Now we see the time line of the birth of being Dhaka as the Capital of an independent Country today (from 1608 to 1971). Among this period City Dhaka has got two backgrounds – one is its Historical/Political background and another one it’s Architectural Background.

Time Line


1600 CE

1608    Islam Khan Chisti was appointed as Governor of Bengal and Dhaka was chosen as the capital of Mughal province.
1612    Renamed Dhaka as Jahangir Nagar
1639-58    Reign of Subahdar Shah Shuja, transferred the capital to Rajmahal
1660    Mir Jhumla defeated Shah Shuja and transferred capital to Dhaka
1663-88    Reign of Subahdar Saista Khan
1679    Lalbagh Fort was built

1700 CE

1704    Murshid Quli Khan transferred the seat of revenue administration from Dhaka to Murshidabad
1704    Kartalib Khan’s Mosque at Begum Bazar
1706    Khan Muhammad Mirdha mosque near Lalbagh
1714    Full-fledged shifting of the capital from Dhaka to Murshidabad.
1717-27    Reign of Subahdar Murshid Quli Khan
1765    Nimtoli Palace
1757    Battle of Palassey
1765    Conferment of the Diwani to East India Company
1769    Devastating Flood and Famine
1772    Established Kolkata as capital of British India
1781    Armenian Church at Armanitola

1800 CE


1819    Anglican Church
1825     Mr. Dowes Laid out the Ramna Green
1830    Walter Founded a Dhaka Committee
1832    Single Span Hanging Bridge over Dholai Khal
Early 19th     Greek Memorial at DU
1857    Shipahi Biplab
1864    Dhaka Municipality was first inaugurated
1872    Ahsan Manzil near Wiseghat
1874    Lord Northbrook laid the foundation of the water works by the munification of Nawab A Ghani
1885    Train began to run between Dhaka and Narayanganj
After 1898 St. Gregory’s Church at Laxmibazar

1900 CE

1901    Electrification of the city by Nawab Ahsanullah
1905    i) Partition of Bengal and Dhakaas the capital of east Bengal and Assam. ii) Appointed Lord Curzon as Governor iii) Old Government House at Segunbagicha Northbrooke Hall at Sadarghat. iv) Curzon Hall at University of Dhaka.
Early 20th
Century    Ruplal House at Farashganj
1911    Partition of Bengal was annulled
1924    Underground sewerage system
1929    S M hall and Fazlul Haq Hall, DU
Mid 20th
Century    Sir Salimullah Medical College at Mitford
1947    Independence of Pakistan, Dhaka was the Capital of East Pakistan
1952    Bengali Language Movement
1971    Independence of Bangladesh, Dhaka became the capital of Independent country - Bangladesh

This is how we have got Dhaka as the Capital of Bangladesh with a long historical period of 400 years.
