One Day in Puran(Old) Dhaka

Some of us are living in Dhaka just for job purposes and others are living here traditionally with family but the question is how much we know about Dhaka? Or how much we have travelled inside Dhaka just to know little more about this city? Dhaka’s size is 1000 square kilometres; so, one day is not enough time to get around and know about this city. But we can perhaps make a routine every Friday to get around in Dhaka and experience it’s beauty. Dhaka city has many historical and archaeologically important monuments. These monuments are not very hard to travel to. Let me introduce you with older part of Dhaka city which is known as ‘Puran Dhaka’.

First of all you can visit ‘Lalbagh Kella (Lalbagh Fort)’. Its situated on the southern part of Dhaka on the bank of Buriganga river. This fort was built on 1678 by Shahzada Mohammad Azam who was the son of Mughal Emperor Aurongzeb. But Nawab Shayesta Khan completed the work of this fort. There is a rumour that Shayesta Khan wanted to make this fort even bigger but he was unable to do so because of his daughter Pari Bibi’s immature death. As a result, though it was built as a cantonment but later on it turned out to be a monument built on remembrance of Pari Bibi. During the Sipahi movement of 1857, this fort had 260 infantry stations. Within the enclosure of this fort, it also has Lalbagh Mosque, Visitors hall and Shayesta Khan’s bathing facility(hammamkhana).

Historical Ahsan Manjil is situated in Islampur area of Dhaka city which is also very close to the bank of river Buriganga. It was built during the time of 1859-1872. Nawab Abdul gani was the founder of Ahsan Manjil. He named this building after his Son Khaja Ahsanullah’s name. In 1906, Muslim league was founded in a meeting held in Ahsan Manjil. It is now a museum open for all.

You can also go to Baldha Garden which is situated in Wari area. This garden contains many rare species of trees. Dhaka Zilla jaminder Narayanchandra Roy founder this garden on 1909. Department of Forestry is now preserving and looking after this garden. Baldha Gaden contains 800 species of 18000 different trees. You will definitely be amazed with the collection of Baldha Garden within the vicinity of mechanical Dhaka city.

You can also visit Choto Katra, Boro Katra, Hosni Dalan in Puran Dhaka. You can also visit renowned Dhakeshwari Temple  in Puran Dhaka. This temple was situated in 11th Century. Ramkrishna Mission is another notable place in Puran Dhaka and also Shakharibajar.

Puran Dhaka is also very famous for delicious foods. You shouldn’t miss the opportunity to taste these foods. Most famous food of Puran Dhaka is Bakharkhani. Haji biriyani, Nanna’s biriyani, morog polau, Pagla’s glassi etc. are very popular food items from Puran Dhaka. Lot of people come from outside Dhaka and other parts of Dhaka city to taste delicious foods here. Nirob hotel is another addition in Puran dhaka’s delicious food culture. You can eat various types of ‘Vorta’ in Nirab Hotel. It serves other type of foods as well. Chawkbazar is very famous for its Iftari items during Ramadan month.
